About the Highwood Historical Society

The Highwood Historical Society was initiated as a volunteer organization in 1995. Its early leaders promoted and planned events to involve the community in supporting and collecting items that preserve the unique history of the people and places in Highwood.

What We've Done

Organizational activities have included annual displays of historical photos and items at Highwood Festival Days and Taste of Highwood as well as sponsoring the following events:

  • Program on a Highwood Legend: Fidel Ghini, featuring memories of Judge Wally Dunn and other Highwood luminaries. May 2008.
  • Program on Uncovering Your Home’s Past and Dinner with Adria Bernardi and Friends, 2007
  • Celebration of the Historical Society’s 10th Anniversary with Firecracker Festival, Bike the Blooms and Programs on Estate Gardens, North Shore Line, and Fort Sheridan, 2006
  • Initiated project “Banners for Highwood” designed and painted by students from Oak Terrace and St. James Schools and presented a plaque to the Highwood Fire Department honoring the individuals who served in the volunteer fire department, 2005
  • Main Event – History of Sports in Highwood and publication of first community newsletter and publication of second book on Highwood sports heroes, 2004
  • Displayed historical materials at Highwood Fire Department Pancake Breakfast, 2003
  • Municipal Heroes Event and publication of first book to honor and recognize men and women of Highwood, 2002
  • Presented Framed photos of Highwood’s Mayors to the City Council and hosted a program by Caesar “Pat” Pasquesi, 2001
  • Co-Sponsored school displays for Oak Terrace School Celebration and Co-Sponsored Fort Sheridan House Walk, 2000
  • Donated the plaque for entrance stone at Evert Park, 1999
  • Grape Stomp Festival, 1998
  • Program by Frank Nustra and printed 1998-99 calendar with historical photos, 1997
  • Highwood Little Guys Reunion and Biddy Basketball Game, and Highwood Homecoming, 1996
