Terrific Tomato Contest
From the Victory Gardens during World War II to the landscapers' pride over the last sixty years, Highwood is home to some of the best, most productive gardens on the North Shore. This year the Highwood Historical Society is sponsoring the first ever Terrific Tomato Contest to see who grows the best tomatoes in the City.
On Sunday August 24th, 2008, our intrepid team of volunteers knocked on doors, talked to gardeners, photographed and collected over 60 entries in Highwood's first ever Terrific Tomato Contest.
The Judges had a difficult task, but somehow they managed to identify the best homegrown tomatoes in town.
This summer we are going to try to make lightning strike twice and host the 2nd Annual Highwood Terrific Tomato Contest. This year we sorting the tomatoes by neighborhood:
Garden District:
Burtis, Maple, Elm, High (south), S. Central (south), Maple, Sard Place, Michigan, Western (south), Morgan Place, Oak, Exmoor Court, Wrendale, Pleasant, Prairie (south), Summit.
Parks District: Burchell, N. Central, North, Jocelyn, Funston, Palmer, Grove, Oak Terrace, Lochard Lane, Llewlyn, Everts, Mears Place.
Oak Terrace Quarter:
High (central), Highwood, Western (central), Jeffreys Place, Evolution, S. Central (south), Oak Ridge.
Lakeview Borough:
Lakeview, Webster, Clay, Walker, Sheridan Road, Waukegan Avenue.
Fort Sheridan:
